Stacy Musgrave, Jess Ellis, Eva Thanheiser, Kate Melhuish, and Megan Wawro
Jess Ellis, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. Her research is focused on the preparation and training of graduate students involved in the teaching of calculus at institutions with successful calculus programs. She is interested in the ways graduate students' preparation to teach inform their teaching practices, their beliefs about mathematics, and their students' success. Through this work she hopes to aid in the development of mentoring and apprenticeship programs that prepare future mathematics faculty nationwide. Her interest in MPWR stems from her own reflections on the role that mentoring has played in her development as a member of the RUME community. She has been blessed with many opportunities for mentorship throughout her career, and hopes to extend these opportunities to all women in the RUME community through the MPWR seminar.
Stacy Musgrave, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Cal Poly Pomona. Her research focuses on better understanding how students use structural reasoning to problem solve and explores the development of undergraduate students' mathematical meanings, particularly with respect to ideas foundational to calculus. Musgrave's enthusiasm for the MPWR seminar stems from having positive experiences with mentors at critical junctions of her career. She recognizes the value of academic relationships that engender a sense of belonging, and has especially benefited from collaborating with others in her transition from pure mathematics to mathematics education research. Musgrave hopes to encourage a sense of belonging for women in RUME by creating a community of sustained support through MPWR.
Eva Thanheiser, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University. Her research focuses on pre- and in-service teacher education, in particular on mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT), the development thereof, and motivation to engage in mathematics learning at all levels. In addition Thanheiser also investigates the use of authentic tasks across content areas and educational levels. With respect to the MPWR seminar, Thanheiser enjoyed excellent mentoring throughout her graduate studies and early career and wishes to foster the same for current students and early career faculty in general and at RUME in particular. A place in which students, early career faculty, and more established faculty can freely share experiences, mistakes, etc. and learn from each other is essential for us to thrive.
Kate Melhuish, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department at Texas State University. Her research focuses on student understanding and practices in advanced mathematics, in particular abstract algebra. Her recent work has emphasized the scaling up of undergraduate mathematics education research to test and expand prior theoretical contributions to the field. With respect to the MPWR seminar, Melhuish has found partnerships, and connections amongst the RUME community as essential for her own growth and identity. She hopes to see MPWR continue to provide a forum where women can freely share experiences, and build the type of personal and professional relationships that can support the unique needs of an academic in the RUME setting.
Megan Wawro, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses student thinking and instructional design in linear algebra, student understanding of mathematics in quantum physics,and documenting mathematical reasoning at individual and collective levels. Wawro is honored to transition to an advisory role in the MPWR movement. She is thrilled with the strong community and support network that started with MPWR 2014 and continues to grow each year, and she looks forward to see how women continue to support and empower one another in the RUME community and beyond.
